Fans of the incredible film may have noticed that Stephen King’s name was rarely mentioned as a creative force behind the story. Where Is The Real Overlook Hotel?

The Overlook Hotel featured in The Shining film directed by Stanley Kubrik was located in Colorado, but there’s just one thing about this place – it doesn’t actually exist, at least not as the Overlook.

In truth, much of the Overlook Hotel’s exterior was filmed at the Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood, Oregon. The interior of the hotel was primarily inspired by the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite.

As for its literary inspiration, King actually used the real-life Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado as the backdrop for his novel. The Colonial Revival played host to King and his wife in 1974. Since the hotel was about to close up for the winter season, Stephen and Tabitha were actually the only guests in the 420-room hotel at the time.

During their stay in room 217, King had a strange dream that his youngest son was running down one of the empty corridors in a panic while being chased by a fire-hose. Upon waking in a sweat, King recalls lighting up a cigarette and by the time he had taken his last drag, he had already built the foundation for his iconic novel.

For those less familiar with “The Shining,” there’s actually a scene in the story where the book’s youngest character, Danny Torrance, believes he’s being chased by a fire-hose.
