Dame Judi Dench aka Judith Olivia Dench is an award-winning British actress that has appeared in over 100 films during her five-decade-long career in the entertainment industry. Before we dive into Judi Dench house details, here’s a brief summary of her remarkable life!

Dench’s passion for performing could be seen at a very early age. As a child, she frequently enjoyed dressing up and singing songs whilst her mother played the piano.

Since her father was a resident physician for the Theatre Royal in York and her mother was a wardrobe mistress for the very same establishment, Dench would be exposed to the world of acting and stage early in life, which would originally inspire her to seek a career in set design before her brother, Peter, would convince her to attend London’s Central School of Speech Training and Dramatic Arts, a school for which he was attending himself at the time.

Dench’s first experience performing on stage was as an amateur actress in the York Mystery Plays in the late 1950’s. She was noted to have appeared as an angel in two of the plays, and then as the Virgin Mary in her third appearance in 1957.

In 1957, Dame Dench would also make her first professional stage debut as Ophelia in the Old Vic Production Company’s retelling of Shakespearian tragedy Hamlet. Dench would continue to work with Old Vic Production Company until she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1961, where she would continue to act in numerous Shakespearian pieces. In fact, over the three decades that the actress spent with this playhouse, she would play every female leading character in Shakespeare’s writing. She would also later go on to star in stage productions of Oscar Wilde.

Dench would make her first television appearance on the British series Hilda Lessways in 1959. Following this performance, she would continue to star in numerous television series until making her big screen debut in the 1965 film Four in the Morning – a role which would later earn her a British Academy of Film and Television Award. Despite her ever-growing fame and success in the United Kingdom, it wasn’t until her role in 1995’s GoldenEye, a continuation of the much beloved James Bond franchise, that Dench would become the internationally recognized name that she is today.

In present day, Dame Judi Dench is most often recognized for her roles not only in the Bond films but also as her Oscar-winning interpretation of Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 romance Shakespeare in Love, her role as Evelyn Greenslade in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), and finally as Queen Victoria in the 2017 film Victoria & Abdul.

Where Does Judi Dench Live?

When this Dame isn’t working on a film project, she can often be found relaxing in her scenic farmhouse in Outwood, Surrey, England.

Judi Dench House is 6,910 square-feet, originally known as the Wasp Green Farmhouse, and was built in 1470. It sits on five acres of secluded land. Though additions have been added throughout the years, this old wood-beamed farmhouse still retains much of the simplistic charm it possessed hundreds of years ago.

The main home is two levels and features 4 bedrooms, multiple inglenook fireplaces, a master suite on the first floor accompanied by an En-Suite bathroom, a cozy family room, a kitchen breakfast room, and a sitting room.

In addition to the main house, there is also a cottage on the property that features 2 double bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a kitchen & dining room, and reception room. Outside, you can find a heated swimming pool, pond, multiple barns for stabling and workshops, fruit trees, and a breathtaking garden complete with a variety of gorgeous flowers such as roses and clematis.

Owned by Dench for over 20 years, the actress has shared her slice of English paradise with numerous pets as well as her daughter and grandson for a time. Never able to stay inactive for long, she frequently enjoys maintaining and improving her garden. In fact, Dench revealed not long ago that she has a secret little forest on the property dedicated to lost friends and loved ones.

Some of the people that she has planted trees for include her late husband Michael Williams, her brother, actor Robert Hardy, and fellow actress Natasha Richardson. Both Dench and Williams shared a deep love of trees and cared for the nature surrounding their home prior to Williams’ death in 2001. Since then, Dench has continued to care for the gardens and her forest alongside her longtime friend David Mills, who also operates a zoo not far from the actresses’ home.

Fun Fact: The property is so secluded that when Dench was invited to meet for lunch with the actual head of MI6, aka the real-life equivalent of her character in the 007 films, the MI6 chauffer that was given the task of driving the Dame to their London HQ was unable to find her house, which resulted in the actress being 45 minutes late to the meeting. So, if Dench ever decides to become a Bond-style supervillain herself, we have a pretty good idea of where she may build her super-secret villain’s lair.
