Fashion designer Marc Jacobs has paid $9.175 million for a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed house in the wealthy New York suburb of Rye.

Mr. Jacobs’ agent, Laura DeVita of Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty, said her client had been searching for an architecturally significant home in Westchester, and planned to use the property as a weekend retreat from his busy job.

"It’s one thing to own a Frank Lloyd Wright, it’s another to own a Frank Lloyd Wright on the water with views of the Long Island Sound," she said.

The approximately 6,000-square-foot waterfront house dates back to the 1950s, when it was built by Mr. Wright for auto importer Max Hoffman. It was later owned by New York philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau, public records show. The most recent owners were investor Thomas Tisch and his wife Alice, who had owned the property since the 1990s, according to property records.
