Al Pacino's House (former rental)

New York, NY

The Story

Al Pacino, born in East Harlem and raised in the South Bronx, made his name on stage first. He won a Tony in 1969, 3 years before “The Godfather,” and a second in 1977.

The 56-story tower opened in 1988, and 6sqft calls it a celebrity magnet from the start, counted then among the city’s most exclusive and expensive buildings.

City deed records show the developer recorded the condominium declaration in April 1988 and sold this apartment to its first owner that November. That owner kept it for more than 21 years.

Across the street stands the Hearst Magazine Building, put up for William Randolph Hearst in 1927 to 1928 to a design by Joseph Urban. City landmark records list it as an individual landmark.

6sqft says Pacino lived in several apartments here between the building’s 1988 opening and 2013. This corner unit, with windows facing north and east toward Central Park, was one of them.

City deed records never put Pacino on this apartment’s title. It changed hands in 2010, 2018, and 2025, each time between private owners, so he lived here without owning it.

In summer 2010, still keeping a home in this building, Pacino played Shylock at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. That fall the production moved to Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre for 78 performances.
