Anne Hathaway's House (former)

Oscar winner for Les Misérables and the star of The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada. On screen since 1999, Hathaway bought this Westport house with her husband, Adam Shulman.

Westport’s assessor dates the house to 1920 and puts it on nearly an acre, with a barn and a pool on the same lot. The town card calls it a custom Cape; Variety called it a Colonial.

Variety described the pool house as a 1920s barn-style building with a loft and a cathedral ceiling. The living room opened through French doors onto a formal English garden.

The town’s property card dates the purchase to November 2016, made through a trust, a year before Variety reported it in November 2017. The couple sold on November 1, 2018.

The sale closed off-market. Variety put the couple’s loss at $90,000 against the purchase price, before counting carrying costs, improvements, and agent fees.

On April 25, 1777, British ships put 1,500 regulars and Loyalists ashore at Compo Beach, opening Westport’s chapter of the Revolution. They marched inland and burned 22 storehouses at Danbury, a Continental Army supply depot.

In 1960 Westport bought the private Longshore Beach and Country Club, 169 acres with golf and a marina, to keep it from becoming houses. The town put the $1.9 million deal together in 18 days.
