Beyonce Knowles & Jay Z's House
Los Angeles, CA
The Story
Beyoncé started out in Destiny’s Child in 1990 and now holds a record 35 Grammy Awards, more than anyone in the award’s history. Jay-Z, the Brooklyn rapper behind the 1996 album Reasonable Doubt, married her in 2008.
A house built in 1928 sat on this site until 2013, when a company run by Dean McKillen of McKillen Developments bought it. Orange County architect Paul McClean drew the modern compound that replaced it.
McClean, a Dublin native who landed in Orange County in the 1990s, runs an office of no more than a dozen people. Getting this compound through approvals and construction took about 4 years.
Oil man Alphonzo Bell filed Bel Air’s first tract in 1923, 128 home lots, and at first refused to sell to Hollywood actors. His wife is credited with the street names, Cuesta among them.
County records date the finished house to 2016 and describe the parcel as Lot 67 of the Bel Air tract. Its 2018 reassessment reflects the Carters’ purchase, with no later change of ownership on the roll.
The Carters bought from the family that built it. Dean’s brother Tyrone McKillen, a Dublin-born agent based in Los Angeles, brokered the 2017 sale, and both are sons of veteran property developer Paddy McKillen.
In April 2025 the Carters took out a second loan on the house, $57.75M over 30 years from Morgan Stanley’s private bank. The first dates to 2021, when they refinanced the loan they bought with.
