Bill Gates's House

Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft and ran it from 1975 to 2000, and now does his giving through the Gates Foundation. He left the Microsoft board in March 2020, the month this purchase closed.

Arthur Nicholas, a San Diego money manager, assembled 4 adjoining lots and rebuilt the site from 1997 to 1999, hiring Ken Ronchetti. He sold the beach lot to Madeleine Pickens for $35M in June 2007.

Ronchetti opened his North County practice in 1973 and worked in sliding wall systems, curved sculptural lines, high-performance glass, and passive solar heating, an approach he credits to Mexican courtyard building.

San Diego County's parcel record shows the lot as taxed today was created by a document recorded on November 1, 2021. An earlier document, recorded in March 2007, created the 3 lots behind it.

Gates and his then wife, Melinda, closed on the place in March 2020. They split in 2021, he kept the San Diego house, and TMZ reported the rebuild finished in May 2023.

LA Magazine quoted neighbors in March 2022 calling the construction noise a nuisance and a hindrance, and reported that the 1999 house had been torn down for a larger compound on 4 parcels.

Del Mar began in 1885, when Jacob Taylor bought 338.11 acres here and built a seaside resort hotel that burned in 1889. Bing Crosby led the Turf Club that opened the town's racetrack on July 3, 1937.
