Britney Spears and Brittany Murphy's House (former, rebuilt)

Los Angeles, CA

The Story

A gated hilltop property in the Hollywood Hills’ Bird Streets, home in turn to pop star Britney Spears and actor Brittany Murphy. Their Mediterranean house came down in 2013; a contemporary replaced it.

Spears bought the house in 2001, at 19, for a little under $3M, according to The Real Deal. In June 2003 she sold it, furnished, to Murphy for $3.85M.

Murphy died in the house on December 20, 2009. In May 2010, 5 months later, her husband, Simon Monjack, died there too.

Murphy’s mother, Sharon Murphy, sold the house in 2011. That December she blamed toxic mold in it for both deaths; the Los Angeles County coroner had found no indication mold was a factor.

In makeup artist Julianne Kaye’s account, relayed by Oxygen in 2021, Spears abandoned the house before she sold it. The reason, as Kaye tells it: Spears had become convinced “bad spirits” were inside.

The rebuilt house is a private home behind a gate, held by owners who are not public figures. Only the gate is visible from the public street; the house sits out of view.
