Cher's House
Malibu, CA
The Story
Singer and actor since the 1960s, from Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe” to “Believe” in 1998, with an Oscar for Moonstruck in between. She joined the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024.
Cher bought this ocean bluff in 1989, according to records cited by Los Angeles magazine. Builder Wallace Tutt III and designer Ron Wilson spent the following decade building and finishing the house for her.
The design draws on Venetian palazzos, the Renaissance villas of Europe, and the Alhambra in Granada. It grew, says designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, from hundreds of pages Cher tore out of magazines.
Limestone and marble came from Italy and France, and an 18th-century Venetian balustrade came from William Randolph Hearst’s San Simeon collection. Bullard later redid the finishes and had artists paint the ceilings with Eastern motifs.
Cher has told Architectural Digest that the house “has been one of the greatest passions of my life.” She told the Wall Street Journal: “From every room, there is an ocean view.”
Cher evacuated her Malibu home during the December 2024 Franklin Fire and stayed at a hotel, her publicist Liz Rosenberg said, per the Associated Press. The fire had covered 4.8 square miles by its second morning.
Cher first tried to sell in 2009 and again in October 2022, both times without a buyer. The estate went back on the market in March 2023 and was still unsold that July, according to lovemoney.
