Chris Kaman's House (former)
Carpinteria, CA
The Story
A 7-foot center taken 6th in the 2003 draft, Chris Kaman gave the Clippers 8 seasons, then took German citizenship in 2008 to play in Beijing.
Chumash lived on this point, and artifacts and burials have been found here. The Bates family bought Rancho el Rincon, most of it, in 1885.
Ranch land until 1926, when the Bates family platted the Rincon del Mar tract. A paved road to the state highway followed in 1927, lined with eucalyptus.
A 1934 deed barred every business in the tract but a physician’s office, and banned laundry hung in public view. Swimsuits were exempt.
Every house on the point ran on a septic tank until 2014. A 1998 study had named them the main source of bacteria in the water, and 72 grinder pumps replaced them.
The Rincon Classic started off this point in 1979, the oldest surf contest in Santa Barbara County.
