Jada Pinkett Smith & Will Smith's House
Calabasas, CA
The Story
Will Smith went from rapper to Fresh Prince of Bel-Air sitcom star to Men in Black and a 2022 Oscar for King Richard. Jada Pinkett Smith starred in Set It Off and hosted Red Table Talk.
Santa Fe architect Stephen Samuelson designed the house, built from 2003 to 2010 in the Santa Monica Mountains foothills. The plan blends Persian, Moroccan, African, Asian, Spanish, and Native American Southwestern influences.
Will found the architect through Gene Hackman, his co-star in 1998's Enemy of the State, according to the Pacific Coast Architecture Database. A visit to Hackman's Santa Fe house, also Samuelson's work, won him over.
County assessor records put the land's last change of ownership in 1999, the year after that film, and enrolled the main house as new construction in 2005.
In Architectural Digest's September 2011 issue, Jada called the house “always a spiritual endeavor.” Will called its circular plan “an infinite cycle” standing for what the couple hoped for their love.
The front doors came from India, where they once guarded a fort. Will told the magazine in 2011 that his favorite spot was the gazebo on the estate's lake: “Answers come to me out there.”
In September 2021, LA County Fire confirmed a structure fire at the estate that left smoke damage and no injuries. Page Six broke the story; PopCulture.com carried the department's account.
