Keanu Reeves's House
Los Angeles, CA
The Story
Keanu Reeves broke out as Ted in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure in 1989, then led Speed, The Matrix, and 4 John Wick films. Born in Beirut and raised in Toronto, he has acted since the mid-1980s.
Reeves bought the house in spring 2003, shortly before heading to Cannes with his Matrix co-stars. Hello magazine reported that it was the first home he had ever owned, after living in a Los Angeles hotel suite.
Hello magazine described it in 2003 as a minimalist house built for an art collector, with tall rooms and wide stretches of wall. The magazine counted a courtyard and a 50-foot pool with views over the city.
Los Angeles County assessor records date the house to 1988, late for its tract. Of the 49 houses there with a recorded build year, 31 went up in the 1960s.
City permits describe a one-story house and record an interior remodel in 2005, 2 years into Reeves’s ownership: new skylights, kitchen work, new flooring, and fresh stucco. A 2007 permit replastered the pool and pond.
Developer Cooley Butler started the hillside neighborhood above the Sunset Strip in 1924, according to the street-history site LA Street Names. Silent film actor Eddie Lyons and his wife, Virginia, were among his investors.
Masked burglars broke in through a window in December 2023 while Reeves was away, police said. A year later Chilean police recovered his Rolex engraved “JW4, thank you, The John Wick Five,” CNN reported.
