An actor since the late 1980s, Leonardo DiCaprio became a global star with Titanic in 1997. He won the best actor Oscar in 2016, for The Revenant.

The 2026 county roll still lists the lot’s only enrolled building, a small cottage, dated 1940. Of the 26 parcels in its Malibu tract, only one carries an earlier build date: 1936.

Director Ridley Scott, of Alien and Gladiator, owned the lot earlier and kept its tiny cottage for 2 years, Architectural Digest says. He then sold it to billionaire Vinnie Viola.

DiCaprio bought the site on November 30, 2016, per property records; The Wall Street Journal reported the purchase that year. The lot sits next door to Mark Burnett, creator of The Apprentice.

Before selling, Viola had won approval to replace the cottage with a two-story house, a pool, a cliffside deck, and a private beach, Mansion Global reported. Architectural Digest said work was still under way in 2024.

Viola, the seller, founded the trading firm Virtu Financial and owns the NHL’s Florida Panthers. He was also Donald Trump’s pick for Army secretary, a nomination he withdrew in February 2017.
