Mark Zuckerberg's Ko'olau Ranch

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s estate on Kauai’s north shore, near Kilauea. WIRED’s December 2023 report puts it at about 1,400 acres, with a partly completed compound of more than a dozen buildings.

Planning documents WIRED obtained center on 2 mansions with elevators and an industrial-sized kitchen, their combined floor area comparable to a professional football field. Nearby, 11 disk-shaped treehouses on rope bridges are planned.

In the plans, a tunnel between the mansions branches into an underground shelter with living space and an escape hatch reached by ladder. WIRED’s summary describes “what appears to be a blast-resistant door.”

Zuckerberg played the shelter down as “like a basement,” Fortune reported. In January 2024 he posted that the ranch’s Wagyu and Angus cattle are raised on macadamia meal and beer.

Zuckerberg’s spokeswoman told WIRED that less than 1 percent of the land is developed, the vast majority given to farming, ranching, conservation, and wildlife. WIRED puts the total, land included, above $270M.

Kauai County’s Real Property Assessment roll counts 15 parcels under a single LLC, about 346 acres, all classed agricultural. WIRED’s 1,400 acres sit across what it calls 10 or so shell LLCs.

In December 2016, Zuckerberg’s companies filed 8 quiet-title suits against more than 100 people holding kuleana claims to parcels inside the estate. He withdrew a month later: “We want to make this right.”

The earliest press account we have is CBS San Francisco’s in 2014, citing Forbes: about $100M for roughly 700 acres, a Pila’a beach parcel plus the 357-acre Kahu’aina Plantation, once planted in sugarcane.
