Oprah Winfrey's House

Oprah Winfrey taped her talk show in Chicago for 25 seasons, from 1986 to 2011. It is still the highest rated daytime talk show in American television history.

Bob Wall, a retired tech executive, spent 5 years designing and building the chalet and finished it in 2001. He sold because he wanted to spend more of his time elsewhere.

San Miguel County's improvement record puts the house at 3 stories, frame with a stone veneer, under a wood shake roof. The county's adjusted year built for it is 2002.

Mountain Village went up on sheep ranch land above Telluride. San Miguel County approved its planned unit development on December 22, 1981, and the town incorporated on March 10, 1995.

Oprah bought about 60 acres in Mountain Village in 2014 to build on, then took this finished house in December 2015 as a place to stay while the new one went up.

Wall put in a 56 foot wine cellar meant, in his words, to “look as much like a mining tunnel as possible.” A private funicular carries skiers from the house down to the run.

The gondola between Mountain Village and Telluride opened on November 19, 1996, and it is still free to ride. The trip runs about 12 minutes and tops out at 10,540 feet.
