Cher's House (former), Owlwood Estate

Los Angeles, CA

The Story

Owlwood is a 1930s Italian Revival mansion in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, that pop singer and actor Cher owned with Sonny Bono in the 1970s. An Illinois company bought it in 2020.

Robert Farquhar designed the house for Charles and Florence Letts Quinn, who built it in 1936 to 1937. His drawings are held in UCLA’s Special Collections, per the Pacific Coast Architecture Database.

Actor Tony Curtis owned the estate in the 1960s and sold it to Sonny and Cher for about $750,000. Time Out, citing Forbes, dates that purchase to 1972; Variety puts it in 1974.

In 2016 a Woodbridge Luxury Homes affiliate paid $90M for Owlwood, per Time Out. After founder Robert Shapiro was convicted over a $1.3B Ponzi scheme, it sold out of bankruptcy for $88M in 2020.

Owlwood is a private, walled and gated estate, and the house stands well back from the road. From the public street you can see the gates but not the house.
