Rachel Maddow's House (former)

Rachel Maddow has anchored her MSNBC news program since 2008, after years in political radio. A Rhodes Scholar, she was the first openly lesbian anchor of a major prime-time news broadcast in the US.

The building went up in 1898 as a paper warehouse and was converted into a 45-unit co-op in 1976. It is 6 stories of red brick on a cobblestoned block near the Hudson.

Titanic’s surviving crew were taken in at the sailors’ home at the end of this block in 1912, and held their first memorial service there on April 19. It is the Jane Hotel now.

Maddow and her partner, Susan Mikula, bought the loft in 2010 from R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe.

The couple stripped the loft back and rebuilt it with new systems throughout, keeping the warehouse’s wood support columns and the wood-burning fireplace.

Maddow and Mikula put the loft back on the market in October 2020 and closed the sale on February 11, 2021, after a decade in the building.

Hudson River Park is half a block west, and the south end of the High Line and the Whitney Museum are a couple of blocks the other way.
