Samuel L Jackson's House

Samuel L Jackson spent the 1970s and 1980s on New York stages before Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever won him a one-off jury prize at Cannes in 1991. He received an honorary Oscar in 2022.

The building went up in 1901 as an apartment hotel, limestone over a rusticated base. Landmarks Preservation Commission records credit Buchman and Fox as its architects and call the style neo-Italian Renaissance.

CityRealty’s building history calls it the tallest on its avenue when it opened. In 1922 the owners traded the avenue lobby for storefronts and moved the residents’ entrance to the side street.

In 1925 the rooftop dining room moved down to street level and opened to the public, which freed the roof for penthouses. An investor group bought the building in 1981 and turned its 67 apartments into condominiums.

City records still carry the home as 3 separate condominium lots on a single floor, conveyed together in every deed since 2005. Architectural Digest says the 3 apartments were joined into a single home.

Jackson and his wife, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, closed on the 8th floor in July 2005. The sellers were the NBA point guard turned broadcaster Greg Anthony and Crystal McCrary Anthony.

They put the home up for sale in November 2018 at nearly 3 times what they paid, then took it off the market. Architectural Digest says they rented it out from 2023 at $15,000 a month.

In August 2019 the couple deeded the home to a limited liability company for $10, and city records show no transfer to an outside buyer since.
