Spelling Manor (former)

Aaron Spelling was one of TV’s most prolific producers, behind The Love Boat, Dynasty, Beverly Hills, 90210, and Melrose Place. He and his wife, Candy, built this manor and owned it until his death in 2006.

The house this manor replaced went up in 1932 for businessman Malcolm McNaghten, to a Gordon Kaufmann design. Kaufmann also drew Greystone, the Doheny mansion whose Los Angeles size record the manor later broke.

Bing Crosby’s family took over the estate in a hurry in 1943 and kept it until 1964. They sold to Patrick Frawley, president of the Schick Safety Razor Company, who sold to the Spellings in 1983.

The county created the manor’s parcel on July 28, 1988, joining Lots A, B, and C of one parcel map into a single estate. The assessor’s roll dates the finished house to 1990.

Construction started in 1988, and the original plan ran to a bowling alley, gift-wrapping rooms, a flower-cutting room, and a barbershop. The Los Angeles Times reported the grounds were known as “Candyland.”

Candy sold the manor in 2011, 5 years after Aaron’s death, to Petra Ecclestone, daughter of Formula One’s Bernie Ecclestone. Its 2019 resale set the record for the highest price paid for a California home.

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and his wife, Wendy, bought the manor in 2025. Per Robb Report, they bought it mainly to host meetings and events for local nonprofit and cultural institutions.
