Steve Harvey's House (former rental)

Chicago, IL

The Story

Comedian and host of Family Feud since 2010 and the Steve Harvey Morning Show. He was among the 4 Original Kings of Comedy in 2000 and taped his talk show at NBC Tower in Chicago from 2012 to 2017.

The tower stands on the site of the 7-story Chicago Sun-Times building, finished in 1958. Hollinger sold the newspaper's riverfront land to Trump for $73M in October 2004 and the wreckers arrived within 2 weeks.

Trump unveiled a 1,500-foot, 145-story world's-tallest plan in July 2001, then cut it after September 11. Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill delivered the 98-story, 1,389-foot version, built from March 2005 at a cost near $850M.

This 88th-floor unit is one of 4 half-floor penthouses that begin on the 87th floor. The penthouse one floor up sold for $17M in 2014, the year the tower's 486 condos were finally finished.

Harvey rented, never owned. Crain's reported he leased the 88th floor in 2012 from a Florida investor who had paid the Trump developer $3.7M for it in 2009, and he stayed for his talk show's Chicago run.

It hit the market in April 2017, weeks before the show left NBC Tower for Los Angeles. The unit went under contract on January 18, 2018, and the county's sale record shows a February closing to a private trust.

In June 2014, 20-foot letters spelling TRUMP went up along the riverfront face. Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office called it “an architecturally tasteful building scarred by an architecturally tasteless sign”; Trump answered that he had full approval.
