Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility

Nashville, TN

The Story

The Tennessee Department of Correction's prison hospital, on Nashville's Cockrill Bend peninsula. Open since 1992, it holds up to 854 inmates who need medical or mental-health care, from minimum to maximum custody.

Kevin Hughes, chart director at Cash Box magazine, was killed on 16th Avenue South on March 9, 1989. A Davidson County jury convicted Richard Frank D'Antonio of premeditated murder on September 25, 2003.

D'Antonio was sentenced to life. The Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed in October 2005, the Tennessee Supreme Court declined review in May 2006, and a post-conviction appeal failed in June 2012.

D'Antonio died of natural causes at this facility on September 10, 2014, still serving his sentence 25 years after the Music Row killing. The trade outlet MusicRow confirmed the death that month.

Visitation is for inmates' families only, and there are no tours. The buildings are visible from Cockrill Bend Boulevard, a dead-end public road, but do not stop or photograph the gate.
