The Home Alone House
Winnetka, IL
The Story
The red-brick house in Winnetka, north of Chicago, whose exterior played the McCallister family home in Home Alone (1990). It is a private residence, and people live in it today.
Built in 1921, the house sold for $1.585M in March 2012 and was fully renovated and enlarged in 2018. It sold in January 2025 for $5.5M, about $250,000 over its asking price.
Most or all of the interior was a set, built in the gym of New Trier Township High School’s then-closed west campus. The house itself was too small for the crew.
Even the McCallister basement was a set. The crew built it inside the gym’s empty swimming pool.
In a 2017 WBEZ story, Home Alone director Chris Columbus is quoted saying the budget did not allow building a stand-in exterior of the house on a soundstage.
The owner during filming told NBC Chicago in 2025 that the family stayed through the crew’s roughly 5 months at the house, living in a second-floor suite set up as an apartment.
The house is a private home seen only from the public street. In December 2025, ABC7 reported the owner was restoring its interior, which no visitor can enter, toward the 1990 film’s look.
