Ryman Auditorium — the filming credits

The Union Gospel Tabernacle of 1892, the downtown Nashville revival hall that housed the Grand Ole Opry until 1974. It is a working concert venue, and nearly every credit below was shot on its stage.

ABC's Stars of the Grand Ole Opry brought network television here in 1954, shot an hour before the Opry to borrow its crowd. Jimmy Dean, Porter Wagoner, and Dolly Parton all shot television here later.

ABC's The Johnny Cash Show premiered here June 7, 1969. Cash told a Nashville reporter he wanted no Hollywood studio and no Hollywood audience, only the Opry crowd that had welcomed him in the 1950s.

NBC's Country Music Association Awards telecast moved in for 1968, with a new stage laid over the old one and white lights hung to mask the rustic room. It returned yearly until 1974.

The concert scenes of Coal Miner's Daughter (1980) were shot on this stage, with Sissy Spacek performing Loretta Lynn's songs. The role won her the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Honkytonk Man (1982) and Sweet Dreams (1985) shot here while the hall sat mostly dark after the Opry left in 1974. The owners planned to raze the hall and reuse its materials in a church.

Jonathan Demme filmed Neil Young: Heart of Gold (2006) here over two August 2005 nights. Walk the Line shot a performance scene here that year, though the Ryman's own movie page omits it.

Patsy & Loretta (2019) is in the Tennessee Entertainment Commission's incentive register with $4.9M spent in the state. The Ryman places the closing duet on its stage; no second source confirms that.

Self-guided tours run about 9am to 4pm, and paid backstage tours put you on the stage itself. The pew-lined room a ticket buys is the room on screen; the 1994 rear wing is not.
