Tennessee Supreme Court Building

Tennessee's Supreme Court sits in this 1937 marble courthouse across Charlotte Avenue from the Capitol. The Public Works Administration built it to Marr and Holman's designs, and the National Register listed it in 2014.

Lamar Alexander was sworn in as governor in the courtroom on January 17, 1979, 3 days early. The 6-minute ceremony ended Ray Blanton's pardon power 2 days after he pardoned or commuted 52 prisoners.

Marie, starring Sissy Spacek as the whistleblower in Blanton's cash-for-clemency scandal, shot in the courtroom in 1984. Dino De Laurentiis's company judged the drapes too worn and bought identical replacements, which stayed.

Sharon Stone and Rob Morrow shot scenes for Last Dance in the ground-floor law library in 1995. Billy: The Early Years, about the young Billy Graham, shot in the building in 2008.

Part of that library is now the Tennessee Judiciary Museum, free Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, with group tours by appointment. Oral arguments are open to the public, with times posted online.
