Al Pacino's House (former)
Palisades, NY
The Story
Actor Al Pacino came up through New York’s Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg and won Tony Awards in 1969 and 1977. On screen, the 1970s made him: Serpico in 1973, then Dog Day Afternoon in 1975.
New York’s tax parcel record dates this house to 1941, 30 years before the compound’s 1971 main house. Press called it the guesthouse, yet the roll makes it the larger of the 2, on the bigger parcel.
The hamlet’s riverfront passed in 1705 to a captain whose family held it until the mid-1700s, then sold it in parcels. Robert Sneden bought 120 acres on the river; his widow, Mollie, ran the ferry by 1758.
Sculptor Mary Lawrence Tonetti owned most of Snedens Landing by 1936, renting houses cheaply to artists like Orson Welles and John Steinbeck. The hamlet’s 1990 National Register entry stops at about 1936, 5 years before this house.
Al sold the house in 2013 to a pair of songwriters and music producers. HuffPost, reporting the deal that May, said it did not know why he sold, only that the sum was steep for a guesthouse.
The deed recorded in 2013 is still the one on New York’s 2025 tax roll, so the house has not changed hands since. The roll’s full market value remains below what Al was paid 12 years earlier.
Cottages & Gardens counted about 100 homes in Snedens Landing in October 2012 and named Al among the owners, with Bill Murray and Mikhail Baryshnikov. It called the streets steep, twisty, and mostly quiet.
