Alex Rodriguez's House (former)

Los Angeles, CA

The Story

Three-time MVP who hit 696 home runs over 22 seasons with the Mariners, Rangers, and Yankees. He sat out all of 2014 on a Biogenesis doping suspension, the year he bought this house.

The firm of Douglas Honnold and John Rex designed it in 1954 for Architectural Products magazine’s research-house series. Like the Case Study Houses, the series used real homes to test new materials, products, and methods.

Honnold already had Dolores del Río’s 1929 house and the 1951 Romanoff’s restaurant building in Beverly Hills to his name. Rex joined him as partner in 1953, the year before this house went up.

Architectural photographer Julius Shulman shot the house for the partners in 1954. His job files on it are held today in the Getty Research Institute’s Shulman archive.

Designer Xorin Balbes remodeled the house before it went up for sale in October 2012. Meryl Streep and her husband, sculptor Don Gummer, bought it the following February.

Rodriguez bought the house from Streep in 2014, about 18 months after her purchase, and held it for 5 years.

Rodriguez sold in August 2019, while engaged to Jennifer Lopez. TMZ, noting he now lived with her, called it his bachelor pad; Jason Oppenheim of Netflix’s Selling Sunset brought the buyer.

County assessor records still date the house to 1954. Its current base value came from a change of ownership and matches Rodriguez’s 2019 sale price, a sign no sale since has reset it.
