New York, NY
The Story
Stand-up comic who broke out with Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer, the sketch show that won the 2015 Emmy for outstanding variety sketch series. In July 2015 she starred in Trainwreck, a film she also wrote.
The brownstone belongs to a row that the architects Neville & Bagge designed for the builders Giblin & Taylor in 1892 to 1893. City landmark records class the row Renaissance Revival with Romanesque Revival touches.
The block lies inside the Upper West Side/Central Park West Historic District, designated by the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission on April 24, 1990. The public hearing that led to it was held in January 1988.
Schumer bought the co-op in September 2014, 10 months before Trainwreck opened, and sold it in February 2017, city transfer records show. When it changed hands again in 2023, the price had not moved.
It was a walk-up: a floor-through apartment at the top of a 20-foot-wide brownstone, with 2 wood-burning fireplaces, skylights, and a private stair to a roof terrace, according to 6sqft.
She put it up for sale in November 2015 and it sat through a year of price cuts, 6sqft reported. It went into contract in December 2016, 2 months after she bought a far larger duplex.
She knew the neighborhood: by early 2011 she had spent 2½ years in an Upper West Side studio, after stints in Chinatown, Murray Hill, Chelsea, Williamsburg, and Astoria, according to amNewYork.
