Anderson Cooper's House

Litchfield, CT

The Story

CNN anchor whose nightly show, Anderson Cooper 360, has run since 2003, and a longtime 60 Minutes correspondent. He is the son of the designer and heiress Gloria Vanderbilt.

Philadelphia architect Wilson Eyre designed the house for Isabella Douglass Curtis, a New York banker's widow, and it was finished in 1910. The National Register nomination says she named it for the family's estate in Rye, New York.

Eyre built it of fieldstone under gray stucco, with a slate roof and a sunroom behind 3 arches. Over the north entrance he set what look like medieval antiques, among them a carved limestone lion's head.

Curtis lived here almost year-round with her son Ellicott, a gentleman farmer whose costly experiments drained the family fortune. Depression losses finished the job, and she left for England to live with a daughter.

News of Cooper's purchase broke in June 2014, and the town's assessment records show the sale closing that July. The owner of record from that sale still holds the house on the 2026 roll.

Eyre treated the design as a showpiece. He published his sketch in American Architect in April 1911 and exhibited it that year at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington and the T-Square Club in Philadelphia.

The house belongs to the wave of wealthy New Yorkers who bought old farms in Litchfield, Sharon, Kent, and Cornwall for country houses after the turn of the century. Rail service to the city made Litchfield a favorite.
