Anne Rice's House (former)
La Quinta, CA
The Story
Anne Rice published Interview with the Vampire in 1976 and built it into the Vampire Chronicles, 13 novels in all. Her books have sold more than 100 million copies.
Rice left New Orleans to be near her son, the novelist Christopher Rice, living in La Jolla and then Rancho Mirage. She bought this house in December 2014 and owned it until her death, her final home.
This city is named for a hotel. The La Quinta Resort opened in 1926, and when the town incorporated in 1982 it took the resort's name.
Walter Morgan opened the hotel on December 29, 1926, and Hollywood came early. According to the resort's own history, Frank Capra and Robert Riskin wrote It Happened One Night there, and Capra called it his Shangri-La for scriptwriting.
The desert years kept her writing, and in partnership. Rice cowrote the Ramses the Damned sequels with Christopher, the first out in 2017 and The Reign of Osiris in 2022.
Rice died of complications from a stroke on December 11, 2021, at 80, in a Rancho Mirage hospital. Her family planned her burial in the family mausoleum at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans.
