Anne Rice's House (former)
New Orleans, LA
The Story
Born in New Orleans in 1941, Anne Rice made her hometown the stage for Interview with the Vampire in 1976 and, later, for her Mayfair witch saga. She died in December 2021, at 80.
Until 1870 this stretch of Uptown was not New Orleans at all. It lay inside the City of Jefferson, a separate town from 1850 that ran upriver from Toledano Street to State Street.
The house is a Victorian of the 1880s, built after the old town had been folded into the city. Its center hall still has the original 1880s stained glass and a mahogany and cypress staircase, according to WAFB.
Rice bought it while she was writing Lasher, according to Second Shelters. That 1993 novel was the second book of her Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy.
The house crossed over into the fiction. Second Shelters says one of the Mayfair families “lived” here, and Baton Rouge’s Business Report called it an inspiration for the family’s New Orleans home in the series.
NBC reported in November 2011 that Rice was selling the house, 6 years after she had moved to California. Second Shelters later wrote that she sold it that year.
