Bernie Sanders's House

Burlington, VT

The Story

Bernie Sanders has represented Vermont in the US Senate since 2007, after 16 years as the state's only House member and 8 as mayor of Burlington. He ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020.

The City of Burlington assessor records this house as a 2-story, wood-frame Colonial built in 1981, with a dormered gable roof and gas hot-air heat. The lot is zoned for low-density housing.

Its street came late to the New North End. The assessor dates its 36 houses from 1962 to 1985, and this is one of 11 Colonials among them.

The New North End was open fields above the Intervale and Lake Champlain until the postwar housing boom, Seven Days reported. The Ethan Allen Shopping Center opened in 1954, and most of the area's homes date from after 1950.

Sanders and his wife, Jane, bought the house in 2009, PolitiFact reported, citing The Wall Street Journal. Their earlier one-story home, his base for decades, is less than a mile away across North Avenue, per VTDigger.

On June 12, 2016, Sanders spent hours here with nearly two dozen allies, including Keith Ellison, Tulsi Gabbard, and Ben & Jerry's founders, planning his campaign's next steps. Reporters waited across the sidewalk, Seven Days reported.

In April 2019, with Sanders campaigning in Texas, a car registered to him was ticketed and hooked to a tow truck outside during street sweeping. Seven Days reported it was saved before leaving, for $75 plus a $35 tow fee.
