Eddie Vedder's House
Seattle, WA
The Story
Eddie Vedder is the lead singer and lyricist of Pearl Jam, the Seattle band whose 1991 debut, Ten, made him a defining voice of grunge. Pearl Jam entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017.
The West Seattle house that Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder has owned since 1993, set on a steep, wooded slope. County records show it has never been sold out of the family.
King County’s sales record dates the purchase to January 15, 1993. Vedder paid $435,000 for the house and the acre-plus vacant lot beside it, in a single sale.
In December 1994, the year he married Beth Liebling, Vedder deeded both parcels to the couple jointly. The same day they conveyed them to a trustee, and they have stayed in trust since.
Since a 2004 trustee deed, both parcels sit in a family trust bearing the name of José Cardenal, a Chicago Cubs outfielder from 1972 to 1977. Vedder is a lifelong Cubs fan.
The assessor’s roll records a 3-story single-family house with a finished basement, built in 1982 and renovated in 2011. Its building grade is 11, which King County labels “Excellent.”
A July 2009 Seattle permit covered a swimming pool, 2 detached cabanas, a bridge, and site work, estimated at $410,132. The site lies in an environmentally critical area, which called for an exemption.
A second permit, issued in May 2010, covered a 3-story addition at the east end of the house, estimated at $491,350. Both closed in December 2012, a combined $901,482 in permitted work.
It is a private home on a residential West Seattle street, with no marker and no public access. If you go, stay on the public street and respect the residents’ privacy.
