Gavin Newsom's House

Fair Oaks, CA

The Story

California’s 40th governor, sworn in January 2019 and term-limited out in January 2027. Before that, Newsom was San Francisco’s mayor and a co-founder of the PlumpJack wine and restaurant group.

Fair Oaks began in 1895 as a citrus colony promoted by a Chicago publishing company as one of its “Sunset Colonies.” The company folded in 1898, and a 1932 freeze killed many of the orchards.

This ground sits inside the 1896 Fair Oaks Addition Sunset Colonies plat. County records show a 1991 parcel map folded 6 older lots, and parts of 10 more, into the estate’s main parcel.

Newsweek dates the house to 1984 and calls its architecture Santa Barbara-inspired. The estate sits along the bluffs, about 15 miles from the state Capitol.

The Newsoms bought the estate in December 2018, weeks before his inauguration, rather than raise their family in the Victorian Governor’s Mansion downtown. A spokesman called the house “more kid-friendly” for their 4 young children.

The purchase ran through an LLC managed by Newsom’s cousin, Jeremy Scherer, and drew ethics complaints. In August 2021 the Fair Political Practices Commission found every payment came from Newsom or an exempt relative.

In 2024 the family bought a home in Kentfield, in Marin County, and in August 2026 they put this estate up for sale. Its brick-walled cellar holds about 5,000 bottles.
