Gavin Newsom's House (former)

Kentfield, CA

The Story

California’s 40th governor, sworn in January 2019 after 8 years as lieutenant governor and 2 terms as San Francisco mayor. As mayor in 2004, he had the city issue same-sex marriage licenses.

The house dates to 1950 and was designed by San Francisco architect Worley Wong. By the time it went up for sale in 2019, architect Julie Dowling had remodeled it.

Wong co-founded Campbell & Wong with John Carden Campbell in 1946. UC Berkeley’s design archive, which holds the firm’s papers, credits Campbell as one of the first architects to build a house as an A-frame.

Kent Woodlands was once the estate of Albert and Adaline Kent, parents of Muir Woods champion William Kent. The family sold it off as wooded homesites, and building boomed after World War II.

Gavin and his wife, documentary filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom, bought the house in 2011, his first year as lieutenant governor. It stayed the family’s Marin home until he became governor.

In early 2019, with Gavin sworn in as governor, the family passed on the 1877 governor’s mansion for a house in suburban Fair Oaks. This house went up for sale within weeks.

It took until May 2021 to sell, off-market, per records reviewed by SFGate. The sale came to light that August, weeks before Gavin survived a statewide recall vote.
