Jennifer Lopez's House (former)

Los Angeles, CA

The Story

Singer, actor, and dancer who went from In Living Color fly girl to the title role in Selena in 1997. Her hits run from “If You Had My Love” in 1999 to “On the Floor” in 2011.

Architect Samuel Marx designed the original house in the 1940s. Born in Natchez, Mississippi, in 1885, he was known for spare modernist houses whose built-in furniture was as much his work as the walls.

Actress Sela Ward and her husband, Howard Sherman, bought it in 2003 and remade it as a French country estate. Ward, a Mississippian like Marx, used reclaimed wood from her home state and Louisiana.

Oil-rich farmer Alphonzo Bell filed Bel Air’s first tract in 1923 and kept what the Bel-Air Association calls an infamous policy against selling to Hollywood actors. Ward sold this house to Lopez, another actress, in 2016.

In August 2022, weeks after she married Ben Affleck, TMZ said the couple planned to move in here after a remodel of a year or more. They bought a Beverly Hills estate instead in 2023.

Lopez put the estate on the market in February 2023 and sold it that October, 7 years after she bought it. The buyers were neighbors who already owned 2 adjoining properties, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Marx also co-designed a public landmark: the 1939 May Company department store on Wilshire. Its gold mosaic tower now fronts the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which opened there in 2021.
