Jennifer Lopez's House (former)

New York, NY

The Story

Bronx-born singer, actor, and dancer who went from In Living Color Fly Girl to star of Selena in 1997. Her 1999 debut album, On the 6, is named for the subway line she rode as a kid.

The building went up in 1924 as a showroom and headquarters for a textile firm. CityRealty notes that its red-brick Neo-Georgian front was meant to recall a London trading house.

The block sits inside the Madison Square North Historic District, landmarked in 2001. The area turned from hotels and brownstone mansions in the late 1800s to textile, toy, and clothing lofts by the 1920s.

Plumbers Local 1, the union, owned the building until a developer bought it in 2011, according to CityRealty. City records show the declaration that split it into 4 condominium homes was signed in May 2013.

Jennifer Lopez was the penthouse's first buyer after the conversion, with a deed signed October 31, 2014, per city records. Chelsea Clinton and NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon already owned full floors below, 6sqft reported.

Lopez first tried to sell in 2017, and the penthouse went on and off the market for 7 years, Architectural Digest reported. City records show it passed to a Florida bank's land trust on July 24, 2024.

In the park across the street, the ivy-covered Shake Shack kiosk began as a hot-dog cart. Danny Meyer set it up to support the Madison Square Park Conservancy's first art installation.
