The Story
Jimmy Fallon has hosted The Tonight Show since 2014, after 6 years on Saturday Night Live and 5 on Late Night. He built the show around musical impressions and games played with guests.
New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission dates the building to 1882 and 1883, credits the design to George DaCunha, and records it as brick with brownstone accents. It sits in the Gramercy Park Historic District.
Daytonian in Manhattan says it is widely called the city's oldest cooperative apartment house, and quotes the 1883 developer: 6 floors sold to stockholders, and rent from the other 4 covered running costs.
Samuel Ruggles deeded Gramercy Park itself in December 1831, after draining the swamp on the site, and gave the first lot buyers golden keys to its gate. Residents still hold them.
ACRIS, the city's property record index, has Fallon and Nancy Juvonen buying on the 7th floor in 2004, the 8th in 2010, and the 9th twice in 2014. All of it transferred out in July 2022.
The top-floor studio he bought in 2014 had been the building's servants' quarters in the 19th century, 6sqft reported, lit by a skylight. He planned to use it as an office.
Daytonian in Manhattan records James Cagney here in the 1950s. Margaret Hamilton, the Wicked Witch of The Wizard of Oz, lined the halls with carved pumpkins each Halloween and once hung the costume in her doorway.
