Joe Biden's House

Wilmington, DE

The Story

The 46th president of the United States, in office from 2021 to 2025. Before that he spent 36 years as a US senator from Delaware and 8 as Barack Obama’s vice president.

Joe and Jill Biden bought this lakefront land in 1996, the same year they parted with the du Pont mansion in Wilmington. Architectural Digest called the house they built on it Colonial in style.

The custom-built house was finished in 1998, in the Greenville section of Wilmington. AP quoted his sister Valerie saying that with a million dollars he would put it into his house rather than travel.

The house backs onto a pond. Jill Biden wrote of grading papers in the small sunroom that overlooks it, and in May 2020 its Canada geese honked through one of Joe’s virtual campaign events.

After the pandemic forced him to cancel a March 2020 rally, Biden waged much of his presidential campaign from this house. He built a television studio inside for news shows, late-night spots, and virtual campaign events.

In September 2024 Biden held one-on-one talks here with the prime ministers of Australia, India, and Japan before the Quad summit. White House officials said the setting was meant to give the talks a more relaxed feel.

In January 2023 FBI agents searched the house for nearly 13 hours with Biden’s consent and found 6 documents with classification markings. Special counsel Robert Hur’s 2024 report concluded no criminal charges were warranted.
