John Prine's House (former)

John Prine wrote many of his classics on a mail route in Maywood, Illinois. His 1971 debut carried “Hello in There,” “Sam Stone,” “Paradise,” and “Angel From Montgomery.”

The house went up in 2000, a columned traditional with a symmetrical face and a staircase rising from the entry. One family held it until the Prines came along.

The county plat file records the 2.06 acres as lot 3 of a re-subdivision, carved from Leland Manor’s original lots 9 and 10.

Prine and his wife, Fiona, paid $2.6M for it in 2018, then reworked the kitchen the next year and hung ornate 1700s Parisian doors upstairs.

His last song, “I Remember Everything,” was recorded in the living room here in 2019. Producer Dave Cobb set microphones up late one night, and Prine sang facing his bar and pool.

Prine died in April 2020 of complications from COVID-19. His estate brought the home to market in December 2022, handled by Simon and Deirdre Kerr of Zeitlin Sotheby’s.

The family launched the You Got Gold tribute in October 2021, the week Prine would have turned 75. The Ryman hosted 2 nights, proceeds going to the Hello in There Foundation.
