Johnny Depp's Eastern Columbia Penthouses (former)

Los Angeles, CA

The Story

Johnny Depp is the actor behind Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd, with 3 Oscar nominations. He broke out as a TV cop in a Fox series in 1987.

A 13-story Art Deco building in downtown Los Angeles, clad in turquoise terra cotta and crowned by a 4-sided clock tower lettered in neon. Johnny Depp once owned 5 penthouses at its top.

Architect Claud Beelman designed it, and it opened September 12, 1930, as headquarters for a pair of outfitting stores. A $30M conversion in 2006 turned it into condos, per the Los Angeles Conservancy.

The Conservancy also records 3 historic designations: a city landmark, part of a National Historic District, and a place on the California Register.

Depp bought 5 penthouse condominiums here in 2007, after the conversion. He joined 3 with doorways as his living space, and used the other 2 as an art studio and a guest suite.

Shortly after his divorce from Amber Heard, Depp put all 5 up for sale together in September 2016, asking $12.78M. The Wall Street Journal broke the news.

The 5 sold separately in 2016 and 2017, including a $1.82M sale in summer 2017. Forbes described the last as a 2-story, industrial-style condo, which closed in November 2017 at $1.425M.

The facade, terrazzo sidewalk, and clock tower are all visible from the street, and Los Angeles Conservancy walking tours include the building. The residential floors are private, so stay out of the lobby.
