Judge Judy Sheindlin's House (former)
Newport, RI
The Story
Judy Sheindlin presided over the syndicated TV courtroom Judge Judy for 25 seasons, from 1996 to 2021, after years as a Manhattan family court judge. In 2021 she moved to streaming with Judy Justice.
The house went up in 2012 on part of the former Arthur Curtiss James estate, according to WPRI. The railroad magnate's mansion burned in 1966, and the estate land was later subdivided.
Its builder was Campbell Soup heiress Dorrance Hill Hamilton, who named it the Bird House. An accomplished gardener, she founded the Newport Flower Show in 1996.
Sheindlin and her husband, Jerry, bought the house in July 2018, the year after Hamilton died. It was the most expensive home sale in Rhode Island that year.
When the purchase closed in 2018, Sheindlin said she was “looking forward to falling in love with Newport.”
The Sheindlins sold the house in September 2025, 7 years after buying it, WPRI and NBC 10 Providence reported. The buyer was an LLC.
Hamilton also bought the James estate's lost Blue Garden in 2011, a year before this house went up. Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. designed it in 1913, and she had it restored.
