Meryl Streep's Salisbury Estate

Salisbury, CT

The Story

Meryl Streep holds the record for acting Oscar nominations at 21, with 3 wins, for Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie's Choice and The Iron Lady. Her husband, Don Gummer, is a sculptor known for large public works.

Oscar winner Meryl Streep and her husband, the sculptor Don Gummer, have owned this Taconic estate in Salisbury, Connecticut, since 1985. The town assessor records about 89 acres, mostly open land and forest.

Per the town’s property card, the couple took title on May 30, 1985, as joint owners with survivorship. Since a July 2023 transfer, the card lists both as trustees.

Country & Town House and the Salisbury Association’s 1986 oral history put the price at about $1.8M. The town’s card records the 1985 deed without one.

The assessor counts 3 buildings: a Cape Cod farmhouse from about 1900, a single-story studio from 1960, and a main house built in 1972. The main house was remodeled around 2010.

Around them sit a boathouse from 1989, a tennis court, and a pool. Permits on the card from 2008 to 2019 cover solar, geothermal, and HVAC work.

The estate’s pond is man-made, held back by a dam completed in 1959, according to the National Inventory of Dams. That federal record puts its surface at about 42 acres.

Her ownership is on record by July 1986, in a Salisbury Association oral history interview. In it, a member of the family that built the pond describes it as “owned by Meryl Streep.”

Country & Town House describes a small sheep farm on the estate, and calls it the home where Streep and Gummer raised their 4 children.

The estate is private land with no public access, and the federal dam record lists the pond as privately owned. Keep to Taconic’s public roads and leave the owners their privacy.
