Meryl Streep's House (former)
New York, NY
The Story
Meryl Streep, a Yale-trained actor, holds the record for acting Oscar nominations with 21, and she has won 3. Her films run from “Sophie’s Choice” in 1982 to “The Devil Wears Prada” and “The Iron Lady.”
Her apartment was in a 13-story condominium tower by the architects Tsao & McKown, built as an in-fill beside a 19th-century warehouse. The firm says the design honors its neighbors while “being ever mindful not to mimic.”
That warehouse, now part of the same condominium, went up in 1882 in red brick and cast iron, with Romanesque Revival details. City landmark records credit architect Thomas Jackson and developer Moller, Odell & Company.
The warehouse belongs to the city’s Tribeca North Historic District. Across the street from the tower stands an older neighbor in the same district, a storehouse put up around 1853 for the Grocers Steam Sugar Refining Company.
Meryl and her husband, the sculptor Don Gummer, bought the apartment new from the developer. City deed records date that deed January 12, 2006, about 7 months after the condominium declaration was signed.
Putting it up for sale in August 2018, Meryl told The Wall Street Journal: “I have gardened under the stars on hot days, and sat by the cozy fire while the snow piled up on the terrace.”
The sale took 17 months and a change of brokers, and the final price was 36% under the first one, by 6sqft’s count. City deed records date the sale deed January 21, 2020.
