Meryl Streep's House
Pasadena, CA
The Story
Actor with a record 21 Academy Award nominations and 3 wins, including for Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady. On screen since 1977, she is Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada to a younger audience.
Whitney Smith and Wayne Williams, USC-trained partners from 1949 to 1973, finished the post-and-beam house in 1959. It was their second for the same clients, 7 years after a Japanese-inspired one elsewhere in Pasadena.
The single-story, L-shaped house sits on a wooded slope above the Arroyo Seco, up a long, narrow driveway. A covered bridge runs in from the carport, and the double-height living wing has glass walls east and west.
Variety broke the sale in December 2017, days before Streep’s film The Post opened. It was the first time the house had changed hands since the 1960s, Cottages & Gardens reported, a gap of nearly 50 years.
A 2018 building permit replaced the 1959 windows and doors with matching glass and metal. That October the city approved changes for a kitchen remodel, a larger studio, and glass around the breezeway linking studio and house.
In May 2019 the owner applied to make the house a Pasadena landmark. The Historic Preservation Commission backed it that August, and planning staff recommended approval when it reached the City Council on October 28, 2019.
The county assessor’s roll still runs from a 2018 base year, the mark of a change of ownership. No transfer has reset it since, so the record shows no sale after the one reported in December 2017.
