Michael Jordan's House
Cornelius, NC
The Story
Michael Jordan won 6 NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s and is widely ranked the greatest basketball player of all time. He grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina, and owned Charlotte's NBA team from 2010 to 2023.
The house that once stood here was custom built in 1993, according to Lake Norman Publications. It sat on the Lake Norman shore beside the 7th hole of The Peninsula Club until its demolition in February 2025.
The Peninsula Club opened in 1990 as a private, member-owned club around a course by Rees Jones and Greg Muirhead. Nine of its holes face Lake Norman, and several play across or beside the water.
Mecklenburg County deed records show a lender's foreclosure deed in August 2012, then a sale to Jordan's family trust on February 19, 2013. Lake Norman Publications names drag racer Doug Herbert as the owner before the bank.
The Associated Press reported the purchase from First Community Bank within days, putting the house about 22 miles north of uptown Charlotte. Cornelius Today later reported that Jordan's mother had lived here.
Jordan had the 1993 house torn down in February 2025 under a county permit for a total demolition, the Charlotte Business Journal reported. Lake Norman Publications named Kingswood Homes as builder of the replacement.
The new house had its frame and roof on by late summer 2026, in aerial photos the New York Post published on September 2. The trust that bought the lot in 2013 still holds it on the county roll.
