Ryan Gosling's House

Carpinteria, CA

The Story

Canadian actor who broke out in The Notebook in 2004 and has Oscar nominations for Half Nelson, La La Land, and Barbie. He shares this place with Eva Mendes, his partner since 2011, and their 2 daughters.

Joel Schumacher, director of 2 of the 1990s Batman films, created the house with Santa Barbara architect Don Nulty. A Montecito brokerage’s 2013 write-up noted a loft, a guest house, and a key-shaped pool.

Architectural Digest’s March 2006 issue says builder John Harpster trucked 3 barns from Maine, each 200 years old, to clad a new structure. Scenic artist Michael Zansky painted its entrance mural honoring Diego Rivera.

Schumacher put it up for sale in 2012, according to Celebrity Net Worth, and cut the price to $7.25M a year later.

Gosling and Mendes have kept the place since 2014 as a getaway about 2 hours’ drive north of Los Angeles, according to Abode2. By January 2022 the Los Angeles house that was their main home had passed to new owners.

The couple left Los Angeles to live “a bit further north,” a source told People, so their daughters would not grow up around other celebrity kids. Fox News carried the account in March 2024.

The canyons east of Carpinteria were stagecoach country. A road over the pass opened in 1878, and a ranch couple at the Ventura County line fed its passengers and, later, Theodore Roosevelt, Enrico Caruso, and Mary Pickford.
