Scarlett Johansson's House

Palisades, NY

The Story

Actress who played Black Widow for Marvel from 2010 to her own solo film in 2021, after breaking out in Lost in Translation. She drew 2 Oscar nominations in one year, for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.

Johansson’s purchase was recorded by deed in 2018, and that deed is still the newest on the town’s 2025 assessment roll. The same roll dates the house to 1953 and puts the lot at about 0.8 acres.

The ivy-covered house was designed by Eric Gugler, the architect Franklin Roosevelt hired to expand the White House West Wing. That expansion produced the Oval Office still in use today.

Gugler was a local too. He and his wife, Anne, lived at Snedens Landing as part of its artists’ colony, and he died at their home there in 1974.

The enclave takes its name from Mollie Sneden, who ran the ferry from this shore to Dobbs Ferry from the 1750s on, and in 1775 it carried Martha Washington across the Hudson. She lived to 101.

According to Galerie, the house once belonged to the Broadway actress Brenda Forbes, whose guests included Katharine Hepburn, Laurence Olivier, and Noël Coward here.

Forbes made her name in 1931 as Wilson, the outspoken maid in The Barretts of Wimpole Street, opposite Katharine Cornell. The play’s director, Cornell’s husband Guthrie McClintic, died in Snedens Landing in 1961.
