Tilman Fertitta's House
Houston, TX
The Story
Galveston-born restaurant and casino owner who built Landry's into a hospitality giant, added the Golden Nugget in 2005, and bought the Houston Rockets in 2017. The Senate confirmed him as ambassador to Italy in April 2025.
River Oaks was developed in the 1920s by Will and Mike Hogg, sons of Governor Jim Hogg, with attorney Hugh Potter. Deed restrictions required homes worth over $7,000 and named styles like American Colonial and English Tudor.
Kansas City planners Hare and Hare drew the master plan, and Houston annexed the area in 1927. Bisnow notes a so-called gentlemen's agreement also kept out Black, Jewish, and other minority buyers.
Harris County's appraisal roll dates the buildings here to 1975, 1999, and 2000, and values the land at about 3 times the buildings. Texas keeps sale prices private, so no purchase price is on record.
The house hosts Santa's Elves each December, a benefit for MD Anderson Children's Cancer Hospital that began in 2006. CultureMap covered it here in 2012, and PaperCity reported the 18th edition in December 2024.
At the 2024 party, guests were greeted by the Houston Children's Chorus singing carols from the curving stairway, PaperCity reported. The night raised $120,000, bringing the benefit's total to $1.6M.
In March 2024 Tilman bought River Oaks District, the shopping and dining center on Westheimer by the West Loop. ABC13, citing the Houston Chronicle, put the price at $450M, and PaperCity later said $460M.
