Zooey Deschanel's House

Los Angeles, CA

The Story

Zooey Deschanel played Jess on New Girl from 2011 to 2018 and sings half of She & Him. Her fiancé Jonathan Scott is half of HGTV’s Property Brothers, and they own this house together.

Gerard Colcord, the architect Hollywood called its society architect, drew the house in 1938 in Georgian Revival. His client list ran to Dean Martin, and Harrison Ford lived in another Colcord for decades.

County records show the acre is 2 parcels: the 1938 main house on one, and a smaller 1946 building, the guest house, on the other. Their 2021 base-year values add up to what the couple paid.

Lower Mandeville was sold in 1926 to become a botanical garden, a plan the Depression killed. The year this house went up, 1938, floods tore through the lower canyon, and the road was still only partly paved in 1957.

Zooey and Jonathan toured it in spring 2020 and closed that July. When the kids asked if they were living in a park, the sycamores and a 60-year-old rose garden earned it the name Park House.

The 2-year renovation wrapped in June 2022. Jonathan swapped the wood siding for brick, glassed over a side patio to make a solarium, traded a storage room and a washroom for a bigger kitchen, and got it LEED certified.

Zooey’s childhood stove was restored and now cooks in the guest house kitchen. Her stated goal for the whole job: at first glance you should think all of it is original to 1938.
