Gallery 202 (Clouston Hall)

A working fine-art gallery occupies Clouston Hall, the Federal town home Joseph Reiff designed around 1821 for Edward G. Clouston in downtown Franklin.

The house took wounded men after the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, and surgeons worked its right side, mostly at amputations. The local telling calls it the Missouri Regiment’s hospital.

Owner Kelly Harwood keeps a cabinet over stains left in the floorboards from that work. A burn in the foyer is attributed to a cannonball strike.

The story goes that a young woman took her own life on the staircase the night before an arranged marriage. No name, date, or record has ever attached to her.

Staff describe a presence they call “Miss Ninny,” who turns up as a floating glove with a finger missing. The stories go back to Bunn Gray, who lived here from 1964 to 2001.

Richel Albright put the house’s ghosts in print for the Franklin Home Page in October 2013, quoting its new owner. Most coverage since comes back to her and her gallery manager.

Walking in is free, and the gallery gives tours of the house. Spring and summer hours run Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and the winter week starts on Wednesday, with appointments otherwise.
